February 2010

East Carolina University nursing faculty members, Donna Lake, Peggy Daw, Debra Kosko, and Gina Brooks, traveled to León in February, 2010.  They met with Rosales Hospital colleagues, gave educational sessions and have arranged to have internet conferences, from Greenville, with their Nicaraguan colleagues at the Rosales hospital.  Donna has joined PHL´s board, and we look forward to assisting her and her ECU group in continued involvement in nursing education at the Rosales Hospital.  This is a much needed step in meeting the goals enumerated for PHL.

April 2010

Drs. William Sullivan and Osi Udekwu performed surgery and gave lectures at the Rosales Hospital for a week starting April 28. While there they had a reunion with surgeons who had visited WakeMed Hospital for observation of current surgical techniques and care. They again are hosting two Nicaraguan senior surgical residents the month of June and again in August.

 

May 2010

 

Dr. Gonzalo Gonzalez and his team from the Cleveland Clinic performed six open heart operations at the Rosales Hospital May 22-29, the second time they have operated there.

 

July 2010

 

The TarHawks group of Dr. Laury Dahners from Chapel Hill will return to Jinotega, Nicaragua, to do orthopedic surgery on July 31 for one week.

 

August - September 2010

 

Drs. John Rose and David Hannon from the Brody ECU School of Medicine will return to see cardiac patients on August 26. Dr. Rose will have a cardiac fellow with him and also again will have ECU students, and Drs. Rose and Hannon will evaluate candidates for heart surgery by Dr. Theodore Koutlas and his team from ECU the week of Sept. 4-11.

 

January, 2009

Dr. Laury Dahners again led a team to the Hospital Mota in Jinotega, Nicaragua, in January, 2009, to perform orthopedic rehabilitative surgery. They performed 32 operations and saw many patients in consultation in just one week.

February  2009

PHL trip to Managua and Leon. Investigating possible affiliation to help with surgery for congenital heart disease for needy Nicaraguan children in Managua. Drs. Jack Rose and Harry Adams of ECU School of Medicine took 5 senior medical students and a medical resident with them for a two week internal medicine elective at the Rosales Hospital and outlying clinics and they all participated in three days of examinations of over 100 cardiac patients at the Rosales Hospital, together with Drs. Rose and Paar and echocardiographic techs Chris Baumann and Wendy Barnhardt. 

March, 2009

 A 20 ft. container with a C-arm portable fluoroscopy unit, a Hewlett Packard 5500 echocardiogram machine, and many supplies for different surgical specialties were in  route to Leon  in early March.

April 14-23, 2009

Drs. Osi Udekwu and Bill Sullivan visited the Rosales Hospital in Leon on a general surgery trip, also visiting were Nicaraguan surgeons now practicing on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, who have spent time at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh on teaching rotations.

May 23 - 30, 2009

A Cleveland Clinic heart surgery team headed by Dr. Gonzo Gonzalez  operated in Leon from May 23-30, 2009. They were the first to use the cardiac operating room which was newly renovated. The emergency room OR and the intensive care unit of the Rosales Hospital were remodeled with all of the operating rooms on the second and third floors of the hospital to be renovated. The neonatal ICU and delivery suite have already been renovated and with Italian funding further renovations of several hospital wards are planned. Dr. Paar, echo tech Ruben Centeno, and Manny and Nancy Suarez assisted the Cleveland Clinic team in their first visit to the Rosales Hospital.
 
September 2009

A cardiac surgery team led by ECU surgeon Ted Koutlas returned to Leon in early September 2009. There was another two week elective for ECU students led by Drs. Rose and Adams the first two weeks of September 2009.
